Cesar Chavez DayToday El Paso Community College (EPCC) is celebrating Cesar Chavez Day! Cesar Chavez Days celebrates the work of Cesar Chavez, who founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) in order to help secure fair wages for farm workers. So, the library and the college campus are closed.

Cesar Chavez Day is not a national holiday yet. It is celebrated every year in California  on March 31st (which is also Cesar Chavez’s birthday) and efforts to recognize the day as a federal national holiday are underway.

Cesar Chavez gave our nation and each of us a unique example to live our lives by.  His selfless dedication for farm worker and worker rights, economic justice, civil rights, environmental justice, peace, nonviolence, empowerment of the poor and disenfranchised, is a monumental legacy that will inspire all and the generations to come.  (From http://www.cesarchavezholiday.org/aboutus.html).

Christmas Party picture from Jenna Welch & Laura Bush Community LibrarySanta and Mrs Claus came to the Jenna Welch & Laura Bush Community Library on December 3, 2011. The party kicked off with hot dogs and cake in the EPCC cafeteria. Families enjoyed the free feast and then got together in the library to wait for Santa.

Santa arrived with music and stories. Santa danced with all of the children, forming a Christmas Conga-Line and then settling down for two stories from Mrs. Claus. Mrs. Claus read Mistletoe and the Christmas Kittens by Joe Troiano and a pop-up version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. After reading the stories, children and their families took their pictures with Santa. Our staff even had their pictures taken!

After the photos were taken, families received candy and gifts. There were books, educational DVD’s and puzzles for all age ranges from babies to teens. While families waited for their photos to print out, children listened to more stories and sang Christmas carols.

Many volunteers helped make the day happen–students, family members and EPCC faculty all pulled together to volunteer their time. Thanks to everyone who helped and also to those who came and enjoyed the event. It was a fun day incorporating stories, music and fun with Santa! Happy Holidays!
